My grandfather sparked my interest in getting out at a young age, showing me the beauty and enjoyment of the backcountry of Colorado and Wyoming. I spent my youth skiing and running around the mountains and my first go at competition was through slalom kayak racing.
I had a former World Cup slalom kayak racer who taught and mentored me in the sport. He taught me the discipline of training and working hard towards a competition goal. At the age of 13 I was running most of the rivers around my home in Wyoming and by the time I was 16 I was traveling around the US racing and running whitewater. I imagine this had a large impact on building my competitive foundation.
After college and graduate school, I became more serious about endurance racing and multi-sport racing became a byproduct of growing up kayaking, skiing, mountain biking and running around the mountains. Whether it be XTERRA, road triathlon, mountain bike racing, or some other adventure, I love the combination of competition and being out in the mountain elements. I am a father of two wonderful kids (Mac and Lucy); my wife, Kellie is certainly the glue that holds things together. I strive for a healthy balance in life and I am always looking for the next great adventure.
